Farmer's Market tarps gone
Rob Tucker @ 15:42:25 04/01/2018-
I agree, and it's obvious.
Harry Kim is being disingenuous, typical local tactic
when the powers that be screw with ordinary citizens.

Agree with your observations.
And you can see the situation from the 2nd floor at 25 Aupuni Street
with a little effort.
Or just take a short stroll.

Party election eve rallies at the Bandstand.

Hot enough today? Real heat doesn't start till July 1. It will be a long slog till then and an even longer slog after. (Hot through Oct.; then Hawaii has a striking temperature drop in Nov.)

HFM tent issue isn't just about rain; it's about heat. How far are most vendor tables set in from the front of their pop-ups? 1-2 feet, maybe. Think that provides adequate shade for our visitors (and locals) who want an enjoyable shopping experience? How long do you think tourists are going to last roaming along the uncovered aisles?

The old tent arrangements provided complete shade and provided cooler conditions than scattered pop-ups. By mid-summer we'll probably see a serious drop-out of vendors on the gift and clothing side......

Want to talk about hot, try wandering around under those tarps at the Kona farmers’ market.

I was in Kona on Wednesday and those “permanent” tarps have also been removed and replaced with pop up canopies. It actually looks much better but nowhere for visitors to escape the sun.

How long before they tell Macu’u Farmers Market to take their tarps down and will MFM resist since they are on Hawaiian Homelands?

Macu’u Farmers Market to take their tarps down ... on Hawaiian Homelands?

This is a job for Kai Kahele. He needs to add the Maku'u Market to his personal inspection tour. He can observe their $2 Checkpoint, and determine whether the disintegrating overhead tarps are shedding plastic fibers onto the ground and into the water table, and therefore must be decommissioned. He seems to be a self appointed expert in making those types of determinations.

Read in the Trib that DeLaCruz is being fined $1,000-4,000 a day. He took down the tent. Article cited ongoing electrical violations. You would think DeLaCruz would promptly hire an electrician--how much does it cost to resolve that? He can't have that many illegal plugs.

One of the big things is DeLaCruz's failure to ensure all vendors are 10 feet back from the sidewalk.

How about we get a building inspector on this. Official quoted in the article: "We have inspectors down there every day taking pictures" of violations.

How about giving an inspector a big red hat ("Building Inspector"), a whistle and a big stick. He can walk around wacking the poles of offending pop-ups: "Code violation! 10 feet back from the sidewalk! Code violation!" Bet they have some inspectors who would love that job.

(I heard a surprising thing from a long-time, credible contractor here: He said some local contractors are driving to Kona to get building permits from the Kona office instead of in Hilo. He said they have been doing this for years--saves them much time and hassle. 3 hours extra drive time. Hard to believe.)

I think the electrical violation was an extension cord. Some article said that at some point.

As of yesterday the fines assessed on the Farmers Market are over $100,000.
The county council will vote on whether venders should be allowed to set up across the street near the bandstand:
