Oink's experiences are hugely relevant. I can see how a drunk would seem very belligerent if he thought someone was locking him out of his own house and he was fighting to get in. Given his mindset he would be very persistent and aggressive. Given the mindset of the occupant of the house he was wrongly trying to get into, they would naturally feel both aggrieved and fearful, rightfully so since they don't know it isn't a drug crazed maniac and even if they did know it was "just" a drunken neighbor making a mistake, in his state the drunken neighbor might assault them for being in "his" house if/when he got in. I can see the mechanism by which somebody who is well within the norms for society in terms of compassion, smarts, and willingness to abide by the law might wind up pulling the trigger.
If this guy was in fact drunkenly bashing through their door. Do we really know this yet? Just asking.
I abhor the idea of shooting blindly through a door though almost to the point of saying never, ever.... but then again if I was in such a situation, where some unknown assailant was battering down the door, screaming profanities, while my family cowered in terror and my exhortations for the assailant to stop only seemed to egg him on, I might be weak and yield to temptation.
I agree 100% with the sentiment that if you get yourself drunk to the point that you no longer have control of what you are doing then you must accept the lion's share of responsibility for what happens to you. No, people should not be able to wantonly kill you just because you are staggering drunk as they should not be able to rape or assault a drunk woman but it makes a difference, a huge difference, when people put themselves in these situations.
The door in my container is steel. I know it wouldn't stop a rifle bullet but I bet it would deflect angling shots from a handgun and I know it would prevent a drunk from getting in. There is something to be said for installing a strong enough door that you can choose to just wait something like this out. If you think there is enough of a risk that you should arm yourself then you should already have hardened your perimeter with such doors and windows. If you don't and instead rely on ready access to a loaded gun then you wind up like these folks:

As a reality check: If this guy was drunk and trying to get into the wrong house, he must have been out. How did he get home? Did he drive while he was this sh1t-faced? Do we not yet consider THAT to be an assault in progress? Maybe it was not a "mistake".
