Just looking at rates united 350 san diego to Kona r/t
I kind of like the 737 ...that airframe has been around a long time ...some of the components date back to the 707 ....tried and true, want decent seating go for the higher price seats ...nicer folks up front too (snarky but true)
Almost killed by a scarebus that lost a yaw damper over the caribbean
We all have our prejudices, grin

I was working for Western Airlines as an A&P mechanic when Western's 1st 737 was delivered to LAX.I guided that airplane into it's parking space.
That airplane only resembles the NG 737 in profile !
The latest are technological marvels but the size of the tube is the same !

Just checked the fare from Hilo to San Diego, and it's closer to $800, which may explain why the Hilo-LAX flight is sometimes less than full. I've flown it several times a year since its inception, and coach tends to be mostly full with paid customers, but first class (a misnomer in this case) is usually full of frequent flyers who got free upgrades.

agreed ,,,better value is the bulkhead seat ...exit rows tend to be taken by employees ....it was a way better flight when Continental operated the route

One problem with Southwest is that if they have a safety issue, like an engine blowing up and killing a passenger, it'll affect their whole fleet. That means more delays than other airlines.
On the other hand, United services Hilo, but I will never fly with them due to their inability to be human. I'm happy to spend a couple of hundred of dollars extra to fly with an airline via Honolulu instead of United. They won't even help a handicapped person to put bags in the overhead bin.
Sometimes there's a principle you simply can't ignore. And there's this:

Like I said ...we all have prejudices ...I used to enjoy flying .....these days its more like taking the greyhound.
The best thing about the Lax Hilo flights is the home town vibe that starts at the terminal ....the worst thing about hawaiian is dealing with the off shore call center imho
That hometown vibe is so true Bullwinkle.
I find myself constantly saying " I love this place " even when not here.

It's not about the money, it's about the time. Back in the ATA days, their ITO-OAK direct left the day with a few usable hours on both ends. Add a layover in HNL and the day is gone.
