But not only is it set low, it randomly changes to even lower limits in spots, without even a cross-street. And marking other stuff on Waze would be handy. Waze happily led me right into a construction+schoolzone mess in Hilo recently, because nobody had marked any of it. I marked it myself, and the next day it guided me around it.

They did some years ago. I managed to get a speeding ticket -- but I had to try really hard. marking other stuff on Waze would be handy Requires alternate routes -- and cellphone coverage -- and risks a ticket for "use of phone while driving". Other than that, sure.

Yes, but do those other places also have an unregulated off road caravan with an abundance of ATV's, big wheel 4 wheel drive trucks, dirt bikes, golf carts, riding lawn mowers, small Kabotas, back hoes, etc., all willing to try and squeeze around the traffic jam on mostly non existent road shoulders, tilted at a 35 degree angle? I offered a similar suggestions 6 months ago...forget it, you're wasting your time... "Please move to the left edge of the lane when waiting to turn left, so people going forward can get by on the right shoulder." (Rule 1) Passing on the right is much frowned upon here. In Hilo you routinely see 15-20 cars backed up on major roads for this reason. In the past 2 years officials painted new white roadsides lines all around Hilo to deter such. (You won't see this idiocy in Honolulu or in most places on the mainland.) "Please move to the left...at red lights when going forward, so people turning right-on-red can get by on the right shoulder." (Rule 2) Nope. Allowed only from a dedicated right turn lane. More white lines enforce such. "There is no reason to stop at the roundabout because a car on the far side is arriving at the same time as you." (Rule 3) Fat chance convincing local drivers of this. (My) Rule 4: When taking a left turn at a Left Turn Yield on Green intersection, pull INTO the intersection and then turn after all oncoming traffic has passed. (allows more cars to turn left) Again, Nope. Most east Hawaii residents equate all of the above as rude driving. And local traffic officials have determined that driving customs that were the norm in East Hawaii in the 1950s are to prevail today.

You'll notice this most often during rush hour on intersections with lights but not green arrows, usually a senior citizen who can barely see over the wheel, does not pull up when taking a left and furthermore, when the aloha comes out from the driver in the opposite directions, giving a hand signal or flashing headlights does no good and the left turner does not accept the aloha, just sits there blinking.

What makes that especially odd is my current state of residence is one of the few where failure to EXIT the intersection before the light turns red is a moving violation. In most states you merely have to enter it before it changes. So the handbook tells you to break the law.

Yup, that is a legal, optional move, but most people here avoid that. In the 1960s in Honolulu people drove Hilo-style. Then traffic got steadily worse, their driving patterns evolved for efficiency. If you are stuck in super heavy traffic, chill. Not much you can do. If heavy traffic is aggravated by lame driving....well....you better chill also. East Hawaii traffic officials are determined to resist efficient driving practices that are the norm most everywhere else. Airport's new speed bumps is an example. |
