The $680, no $800 million dollar plan for Puna
#41
While the governor does have some emergency funds he can tap, the legislature has to appropriate any significant new or on-going funding. So Harry's big suck-up to Ige might not be what it takes to get his Christmas list. Although I have little respect for them, the legislative leadership has been smart enough to have already expressed misgivings for Harry's approach. We'll see where it goes, especially given the fact that lots of things on the list are either ridiculously inflated or have nothing to do with the eruption. Like HiloPuna, I don't expect an island wide bonanza to be in Harry's future, but I could be wrong. I've been wrong before.

"Harry Kim's time in office should be pau. I will continue to like the man and wish him well personally, but what I have witnessed with his Parks & Rec. Dept, how his admin.... has handled the residents of Leilani..."

Another thing going on is there are multiple parties pushing lava zone restrictions. That DLNR spokesman (shown on a clip on another thread) at a meeting the other night was rather belligerent toward anyone violating lava rules.

Harry and Civil Defense are the county and Leilani falls under the county, but we don't have a full picture on which officials are the real hard-asses here. Both county police and DLNR are issuing citations.

I, who appreciate your steady bitch, most of the time, think it is misplaced here.

From my reading of the article there was a glitch and the community stepped in, including the council members from the most effected districts, and all told it was a minor thing that if it wasn't done would have had major consequences.

In fact I think you might find that this is an example of some good being done.

And yeah, I am bias. I use the Waimea airport regularly going to and from Maui, and find the entire experience to be far better than any other on the island. OMG the kindness, the relaxed atmosphere. It's great. Though I will agree the Mokulele style of air travel probably ain't for everyone.

HiloPuna - but Kai Kahele will have to carry the water for Puna on this one

Rumor mill is that he is not on board with this funding request. I'd be interested in some informed reasons as to why this may or may not be true. I'll offer up the simplest one - Hilo has no interest in seeing Puna recover and continue to grow in population & influence. Other ideas?

I'm a bit confused here. As much as I dislike Kahele for his completely unethical approach to trying to kill the TMT, my understanding is he represents the greater Hilo area but not Puna. I understand the argument that he should support help for Puna, but that's not his remit, so don't understand why his name has been mentioned. Could someone clarify?

It’s simplistic to restrict local officials to their electoral districts. HPP and surrounding subdivisions are bedroom communities of Hilo. This eruption has disrupted all of East Hawaii, not just Puna. And while RR may not be with the majority, as Kai and Lorraine are, that doesn’t mean they don’t interact and go to bat for each other. When RR was ascendant two sessions ago he actively supported Hilo issues, and last session KK tried to carry RR’s Rat Lungworm bill and others thru the session. In addition, both Kai and Lorraine have family and friends throughout Puna.

BTW: It’s also not far fetched for reasonable people to still believe in altruistic behaviors. There’s a persistent parochialism on this forum that’s bedded in grievance, steeped in cynicism and topped with arrogance. It leads to skipping over the obvious, which is that your fellow citizens that make up the government and the business community are not out to get you ( or Puna). In fact, many live in Puna, or came from there.

And just for the record , KK fully supports astronomy on the mountain and TMT in particular. He was playing a long game, you saw the (poorly played) opening hand. He’s still young in the job, and his MK bill showed that, but he’s a quick study. If you have a chance call his office and ask for him to call you back. He will meet with anyone to discuss any issues important to you. He is, by far, the hardest working legislator I’ve met and he’s made himself extremely knowledgeable on the history and uses of public lands on Mauna Kea. His vision is for a resolution of issues such that they will be equitable and durable. Those two qualities are essential and intertwined.

For some, there are 189 million reasons to think otherwise.

Thanks, but you didn't answer my question.

TK, You seem well educated, with a rational mind, so are you being purposely obtuse? Or perhaps you prefer argument to answer?

I not only answered your question as to why KK might support interests beyond “his remit” I went on to provide a perspective to your (unsupportable) assertion regarding his ethics. Use your critical reading skills to find 3 reasons in just the first paragraph! Don your “Where’s Waldo” stocking cap and find one more in the 2nd paragraph ( hint: first line)

Or stay stuck if you like...

Ironyak,
I think that’s the parochialism I’m talking about

Read my previous post again. Why is Kahele responsible for Puna?
