Wuhan Corona Virus Coming Soon? (Now Here)
#41
41 out of 1.4 billion?

Wouldn't it more appropriate to measure the ratio of deaths to the number exposed rather than deaths to the nation's population?

The current numbers, today, are 56 deaths to 2000 infected.. or around 1/35

On Aljazeera..

Though I suspect any correlation between numbers being quoted and reality is tenuous at best.. so far. At least, with all the attention being given, we can expect the medical industry is racing to figure it out.

It's still concerning that China has shut down major cities and quarantined over 50 million people as of today even though the Wuhan virus seems to be not much worse than the flu?

edit for spelling

Are you still suggesting the Chinese government wants to murder its own citizens on purpose?

Me? Nope, I just have questions and am bewildered.

Sure, but these numbers are largely meaningless as there is no way to count actual people exposed as it appears to be contagious even when patients are without symptoms.

https://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/...o-symptoms

Guestimates appear to put the actual infected totals at 10,000+ since the beginning of the year, likely to reach 100,000+ in the next couple weeks. Remember however that SARS 2003 only killed ~774 people total, which is far less than the ~80,000 that died of the regular flu in 2017 just in the U.S. alone (that's 219 deaths a day and Hawaii had the highest per capita mortality rate @ 29 per 100,000 - take that Mississippi!) So 56 deaths from 2019-nCoV so far is still a long way from the U.S. normal daily flu deaths, much less the 1918, 1957, 1968, or 2009 flu pandemics.

How on earth do you measure how many people have been exposed to the virus?

PaulW,

"Are you still suggesting the Chinese government wants to murder its own citizens on purpose?"

Are you still beating your wife?

I understand you are a skeptic but using such a logical fallacy is beneath you and doesn't contribute to the discussion.

Sorry if I misunderstood you P007. First you quote a nutjob rag then you say it’s a “coincidence” that this happens just at the worst time of the year for containing the outbreak. I thought you were being sarcastic. My apologies.

"I suspect any correlation between numbers being quoted and reality is tenuous at best."

It's well documented that China lied through the entire SARS outbreak. The last thing they want is to risk the world cutting them off or turning their containers of exports around. The limited amount of news coming from non-official sources is vastly different than official government accounts.

The Lancet just published a small-sample study that shows the death rate is 15%, infection rate to those exposed to virus is 83%: https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lance...5/fulltext

MSM headlines now reporting the virus in California, Shanghai, Beijing, elsewhere.

Chinese media reporting today the virus has mutated into a "more spreadable" form: http://news.trust.org/item/20200126105121-12mxo
