Remember when people were cancelling their trips to the BI because of the volcano? Some people were even cancelling trips to Oahu because of a volcano on a different island. The eruption was just a blip on the tourism radar.
What is going to happen if the media starts reporting that Hawaii is a "hot zone" for the virus?
Of course the "authorities" are going to say whatever they have to in order to downplay the risks. Billions of dollars are at stake. The state only has one industry and it's in jeopardy.
I wonder if FEMA grants cover tourism advertising?

I was at a Mexican resort during the swine flu scare. The place was a ghost town. Oddly, people will look past drug cartel shootouts when choosing their vacation destination but put a novel infectious disease in the headlines and they cancel trips.

The state only has one industry and it's in jeopardy.
Hawaii has three industries: tourism, disaster recovery, and bureaucratic overhead.
Only one of these industries is jeapordized by the virus -- but it's also the only industry that benefits people other than government employees.
Just wait until freight quarantines impact the food supply!

Interesting observation. It must be that one is tangible and the other is not. Bullets whizzing by your ears is a known. where sniffing a virus up your nose after some random sneezes is a known unknown.
We are kinda lucky because due to various circumstances, no actual testing has been done. so as long as there aren't any confirmed cases in Hawaii the tourists will flow.. and bring their money and lavishly spend it all. but the second a red dot shows up on the map its all over. History shows everything the state does or says is to protect tourism dollars.

Well, we also have the military which I suppose could be called a type of bureaucratic overhead, albeit a useful one. But have no fear. The "protectors" are hellbent on chasing the military out of Hawaii which raises the interesting question of who's going to keep their restored kingdom from being absorbed by the Chinese or the Russians.
Getting back on topic, Harry Kim has no other objective more important than keeping the county payroll bloated and the county workers (and their union) happy. It all gets back to "the right people" again and again.

If I get killed by a drug cartel on vacation my family gets a fat life insurance payout.
If I get infected by a plague on vacation my family gets the plague.

Democracy And The Will Of The People
Like Crime & Punishment.
A novel, but set on the Big Island, with similar consequences.
... Vague and objectless anxiety in the present, and in the future a continual sacrifice leading to nothing—that was all that lay before him. ...

I just read this on CNN:
Concerns are mounting about how long the novel coronavirus may survive on surfaces -- so much so that China's central bank has taken measures to deep clean and destroy its cash, which changes hands multiple times a day, in an effort to contain the virus.
For any Punaweb member who would like to get out ahead of this potentially dangerous virus contaminated money transmission vector, please let me know in this thread. Better safe than sorry, right? As quickly as is humanly possible I’ll arrive at your door, in mask, disposable gloves, and Tyvek suit, then carefully pack your dollar bills in airtight ziplock bags for let's call it “safe disposal.” Suspicious or questionable coins accepted too.
You’re welcome.
