There are always layoffs everywhere even in times when there is record low unemployment. So sure, you can find some hospitals somewhere laying off workers.

But the real question is, what percentage of hospital staff are being laid off? 10%? .0000001%? How many extra workers have been hired since the onset of COVID-19 preparedness? Is there a net gain or a net loss?

The internet will tell you anything you want to hear. But is the link you find a microcosm of a much larger event, or does it reflect the larger, bigger, broader scope of an event?

That is, are hospital workers getting laid off all across the country, in large numbers, because they’re not needed?

Many hospitals and clinics about the US are presently hurting, directly as a result of Covid19, because non essential services they usually provide have been shut down. As a result, their revenue streams have dried up to a trickle. It's true, it's true!

This discussion started with a comparison between the flu & COVID-19.
Is COVID-19 worse than the flu?
Someone pointed out that hospitals were overwhelmed with patients, which doesn’t occur in a normal flu season.
Someone else countered that, no, in fact hospitals are not overwhelmed, they are laying people off.

Hospitals are laying off staff in areas not related to the treatment of COVID-19 patients. But does that indicate they’re not at all busy treating COVID-19 patients, or is it that they’re focused mainly on treating COVID-19 patients?

You might also ask, if hospitals are no more busy than in a normal flu season, why do healthcare workers have a shortage of PPE? Have you ever heard of a PPE shortage in a normal flu season?

Pretty cool.. now we can all just take a deep breath and see how all those that are anxious to reopen sooner fair. I would hate to be thrown into all that by some rash premature action taken by Ige. Am glad he's taking the more conservative road..

I do fear absolute chaos on the mainland as this struggle between those that listen to Trump and those that listen to reason duke it out.

Easy for those of us that are financially secure, but Ige's Labor Department still hasn't paid some people unemployed for over a month now. How will they cope with another month? Let's hope the (until recently) hard working citizens of Hawaii are taken care of soon.
