4-engine prop plane circling
#1
near Kaloli point about 8:30 am today. Had a red tail on it. Anyone know what it might be? Coast Guard exercise maybe? It made about 5 trips.

Maybe coast guard? They've been patrolling Big Island waters the last few weeks for maritime violations.

I saw it too, and watched the plane circle a number of times.  It’s a Coast Guard plane.  I didn’t see any signs of an ocean search being conducted (police cars, helicopters, etc) so I agree with eightfingers2.0, it’s most likely a training exercise.

Thanks, I kind of was thinking that. The plane was making some really tight turns and was fun to watch the maneuvers.

At least one helicopter is out here again tonight and it’s been there for a few hours.

C-130? Coast guard runs those for maritime patrol.

The Coast Guard's c130's do touch and go practice all the time out of Hilo airport.

Yeah I was down at South Point once and a Coast Guard C-130 came screaming around at maybe 100ft off the deck. Cool stuff.

My uncle lives on Oahu, across the bay in Kaneohe. You certainly get a front row seat to lots of aviation there.

Googled C-130. Looks like that’s it.
