Oh gosh Ms. Wao.
I have tears in my eyes over this.
Just absolutely God-awful news.
I am beginning to think that Hawaii's DLNR goes out of its way to find and hire and then continually protect the absolute dredges dregs of humanity for its work force.
In as much severe punishment for this type of negligence on the part of the dog owner(s) is warranted, I DO NOT favor jail for them.
No - I favor complete and total financial ruin for them. They should have been fined $200,000.00 and not the initial $20,000.00 that was bargained down to $18,000.00.
Nope - $200,000.00 fine - and $100,000.00 additional for each 24-hour period elapsed until paid.
Oh, and to be clear - she should have been fired immediately, dogs impounded and euthanized. With the owner(s) having to pay those costs as well.
This is where the Governor should have picked up the phone, call DLNR Chair (who is paid north of $150k a year) and give the Chair 1 hour to fire this employee. Or the Chair is fired. Continue on down the line, until the RIGHT person does the RIGHT thing!

Absolutely. Or something to that effect. No excuse whatsoever for not firing this idiot immediately. Yet she's still on the job!

I wholeheartedly agree. Why wasn't she fired in 2020? What took priority over the death of a monk seal pup that should never have happened? Anyone who had the authority back in 2020 to fire her should also be fired now after this latest incident.

Unionized government employee. Can't just fire them, sadly.

It’s acceptable for a DLNR employee to take 4 dogs with them to work?
Then ignore the NO DOGS signs, signs and rules they are supposed to enforce?
Look away now because you know it’s coming, I can’t help myself - - maybe if her pickup truck had a telescope mounted in the bed there would be some protests to protect the sacred aina and its creatures?

She's a poster girl for "entitled". I doubt the union would put much effort into defending her.

Bringing the telescopes into this is not helpful.
It’s keepin’ it real.
There are multiple groups which organized to protect the aina, Mauna Kea. They have extensive mailing lists which could be activated, spokespeople who might talk to reporters and bring this very real attack on endangered Hawaiian wildlife to the public’s attention. If the environment is their issue and concern.
Petitions are only slightly more effective than thoughts and prayers.
This is actual near extinction, of a species that lived on and around the Hawaiian Islands long before any humans paddled ashore.

Effective and real leadership would stand up and fight any union issues with her termination.
In fact, the union itself should fire her.
And yes, to your point HOTPE, I fail to see how a mountain top continually becomes more "sacred" than various native animal species, most ONLY found on this tiny speck of rock and nowhere else in the entire world.
Hawaii needs what big cities have on the mainland - a local TV station "Investigative Reporter" who follows these types of issues and continually would be knocking at her door and camped out in Green's office - and be broadcast on the 5, 6 and 10PM newscast every night - until she really is fired.
A good "perp walk" would be in high order as well.
