TomK - someone on the protesters' side flew a Palestinian flag. I'm sure that's perfectly legal, but consider what that entails.
Yesterday at the Hilo protest I saw at least two Palestinian flags and several signs condemning the situation in Gaza. But do pray tell what more it entails other than some cloth, wind, and people in Hawaii legally expressing their concerns about mass destruction and tens-of-thousands of innocents being killed.

More directly related to this thread were the creative chant "Only shaved ice in Hawaii" and the more subversive sign slogan "No one is illegal on stolen land". Plenty to unpack there about the nature of Land and Power for those so inclined (but maybe, like me, they weren't born here and so should just keep quiet and be respectful...)

I didn't mention what you wrote. I wanted to point out why some people might be upset.  We live in a country that allows free speech. I'm not aware of any other country that has the same laws as the US does. Unfortunately, that means assholes will do the same thing you see here - troll the public. I don't give one about shave ice or stolen land. The latter would have more meaning if the US and her allies just gave up in 1941, but they didn't. That was a generation of people from all the allied nations that allowed us to live the way we do now and allows you to post nonsense without consequences.

Frankly, even bringing up the subject of shave ice is so disrespectful, but it's perfectly legal.

It certainly isn't morally right.

You don't, eh? You should. After all, your god is built on stolen land.. and at some point ICE is going to be asking all those that work there for their papers. You do have your papers in order, right? And hey, if the VA docs in Hawaii will no longer treat Hawaiian Dems are those laws you say we have real anymore?

But seriously, what I want to know is shave ice kosher? What if it's made on the Sabbath?

Personally I like the flags, I ain't a flag waver per se, but I do like the colors and the happiness most flaggers exude. Though I'll admit to keeping a Tibetan flag just incase I want to wave one, and have, since the MK protest started, also gotten myself a Hawaiian flag. Though to be honest, I'd probable hang it up rather than wave it..

What kind of flag do you wave Tom? Do you exude happiness when you do? Do you ever exude happiness?

It’s Monday.
They’re arresting farm workers like Kona coffee pickers again.
No link, because really, what’s the point?
These people have no idea what their policy is, or whether they even have a policy, or if they’re just making it up as they go along.

OK.
Might be paywalled:

HOTPE, I hope youʻll reconsider and post the link. I canʻt find anything online yet. A new source of information would be welcome. Mahalo.

Thanks for the link Edge.

It was all a lie.. an attempt to placate last weekend's demonstrators..

I think our government, local, our police, should be arresting ICE agents unless they have a fully legal, signed by judges singling out specific individuals for crimes committed, warrants, as soon as they set foot on the Big Island. The fact that our mayor is not standing up and directing the police over this is embarrassing. It is pathetic, and a valid reason to impeach him. If he can't protect us he should be replaced, and waiting for an election cycle to do it is way too long.

Otherwise, I think it's time the citizens of the island do it. After all, isn't the NRA's excuse to own guns indiscriminately that they need them to protect us from a fascist government? Well, where are they?

Thanks, but yes, paywalled. interesting that the WaPo has this story and none of the local news outlets. Donʻt need to read the details but is it clear that this happened today and didnʻt take place before the "revised" guidance?

The original “policy” was arrest everyone.
Then last  Friday? Saturday? The head of ag in the administration managed to get the “policy” reversed so farm workers (and hotel workers) would not be included in the arrests.
Today, an hour or two ago the “policy” was reversed again because someone else spoke last.   (It’s widely accepted that whoever speaks last to HIM gets their recommendation enacted as “policy.” For what it’s worth.  Minutes? Hours? Days?

How do you run a farm without knowing you have workers? Or operate a hotel?  Young men who may or may not have graduated from high school in Na’alehu or Pahala are not going to drive 50 miles to lug 109 lbs sacks of coffee around.

Men from Mexico or Honduras will.
Young woman from the Philippines will clean hotel rooms, and a few from Puna who will catch the 2 hour bus ride in Hilo at 3:30 AM for the west side.
