Punatang - Remember, stay focused on the Billionaires dividing us.
So that means we repeatedly endorse them on Punaweb and vote for them on our mail-in ballots and give them a pass for all their Aloha-lacking (that Aquinas fellow may even say unChristian-like) behaviors, or something else? Trying to be the change, but behavior being modeled makes your suggestion murky and unclear, despite all the recent sunshine. Honor the little gal that's trying to help herself. We can all do better. We must. While I don't know any multi-state Doordashing Grannies, I do know someone who did some dashing as a side hustle in Hawai'i last year, and it being the season, we were just discussing the tax implications involved. Some of the highlights were that Doordashers are independent contractors, not employees, so in Hawai'i you need to register for a GET license, file estimated taxes during the year, and fill out a Schedule C at the end (fun!). The 1099 provided just gives a total income, but you have to track tips separately, along with mileage during deliveries, so you can file those items appropriately. The "No Tax on Tips" is, of course, a misnomer and inaccurate, as while you get a Federal Income tax break on up to $25K tips (IIRC), you still pay the much larger Self-Employment tax on all your income, including tips (the olds want their Social Security and Medicare money, regardless of any possible complaints about redistribution in the past). Overall, they said it helped fill in some gaps with their other work last year, the "No Tax on Tips" did very little to improve their income, and there is no reason to dash currently given the high gas prices which makes it unprofitable (apply those "I Did That" stickers as needed). Obviously, not a CPA, gather your own info, etc, but if you are in a position to use these sorts of gig delivery services, remember that for many it's a necessary side hustle that provides marginal income so set reasonable expectations and tip in person when possible.

Excellent point Yak! - I would like to clarify just exactly what is meant by the "Self-Employment tax." Generally, an employee of a company pays 6.2% for Social Security tax and another 1.45% for Medicare tax for a total of 7.65% of earned wages. The company that employee works for then MATCHES that same tax, thus remitting to Uncle Sam a TOTAL of 15.3% of the wages earned in your name. A Self Employed 1099 Independent contractor thus has to pay and remit that same TOTAL of 15.3%. There is no point in even mentioning the salary caps as there is no way a Doordasher on the Big Island is earning $184,500 in a year. In the meantime, damn straight - that this "olds" wants her rightful due! And no one better complain about that!

That’s what I did since the 1980’s. Now in my golden years, I pay taxes on a large portion of my social security, and over $2000 a year for Medicare. If I’m draining the retirement system for the last few years, it’s because I filled it for decades prior. Also, I’m now being taxed on the taxes I paid into the system. But as Warren Buffet says, it’s better than the alternative. (For those unfamiliar with his observation: dead.)

In Hawaii, that Doordasher needs to rent office space or get a Conditional/Special Use Permit (depending on how their house is zoned).

True that HOTPE! We're stuck sharing same coconut, in the same boat on the same island! But then who else is left to pay for Elon's, Jeff's, Larry's, Mark Z's and B's, and even some very orange complected guys Lear, Gulfstream, Embraer, Bombardier, Boeing 757 and then maybe a gifted 747? Think one of them might swing by ITO and pick us up so we might get a ride once?

But I’m glad to pay for someone’s food in Pahoa or Keaau. The last time I happened to drive by the HPP Community Center on a food bank day the line went through their property, down Maku’u, winding down the side street as far as I could see. There were no Cadillacs in the line, no newish cars, and I presume no private jets or yachts back home either. I’m glad to pay for forest research. I’m glad to pay for public tv and public radio (fund drive on right now as we speak, they lost $500,000 in federal funds this year). But - - I don't believe in Kings I don't believe in Elvis I don't believe in Zimmerman I don't believe in Beatles Sorry, what was I saying? Boomer sidetrack weave there. (I do believe in Beatles)

Yea, I totally hear that. If it's just a tiny side hustle that they don't really do enough to make any real taxable income, then the no tax on tips would obviously not be too exciting for them. If they are a full time wait-person in Pahoa or Waikoloa, they might be more appreciative of the legislation which was unanimously approved by all of the members of The Senate who voted. Hey do you think they would be cool if you shared their contact info? We've been trying for the longest to get a same day delivery from Costco.

Good idea! If there was a group of Puna residents who ordered on the same day, met the driver’s minimum total order requirement, and we all agreed to tip him/her in cash on delivery (no tax on tips without the flaming hoops) it could be a real win-win. |
