wahine, you didn’t happen to do your undergrad work at UW did you? My first college girlfriend had a roommate who had postcards and photos of nuclear power plants from around the country as wall decorations. Most people I knew had day glo Hendrix or Che on their walls, so I remember going around the room to see where and what she had picked out as kind of her personal top 10 list. Quite a variety of designs! I think she was majoring in nuclear engineering if I remember correctly. Quiet, but very agreeable, when we asked when she might next be studying at the library for a few hours?
Aloha HOTPE, I didn't do undergrad work at the UW. Out of curiosity, what year(s) would that have been. Wouldn't that be a small world if I knew her...

HiloJulie - Have you considered being a visionary? ... we would be there already! And with BOTH eyes wide open!
No matter how well I use my eyes, you'd have to still use your ears. As has been said many times before, you all didn't listen to NASA or Carl Sagan, so other peoples' ability to see and describe the challenge may not be the issue.
Kane - Ironyak and Mymanao embody the classic trust-fund kid mindset... It’s reminiscent of the Freemasons’ Royal Order of Jesters
Um, someone forgot to place some money in that trust fund and send me the silly hat with the tassel. Could you get that sorted out please, so it doesn't look like you're just making up nonsense about others? Once the check clears, I'll do my part for the next County Fair in Hilo and share my recipe for the best Grilled Government Cheese sandwhich - it's ooey-gooey and melts like nothing else! (Your projections are so far from reality it makes a lot of sense why you'd outsource your thinking to a chatbot).
randomq - but the biggest impacts (commuting, whatever powers their apartment) are not totally up to them. I don't think it's fair to browbeat the working class when the oligarchs are directing society as a whole off the pali.
There are a lot of system forces in play of course, which is why individual choices have to move towards larger scale systemic choices in the realm of politics and governance. When polluting behaviors include the cost of their cleanup (still at least a couple hundred dollars per ton CO2) then the entire system of housing, work, transportation, etc... would move to cheaper solutions (living locally, geothermal, wind, solar, etc) that don't have the same ignored and externalized costs.
As a wise Kalapana Punatic once told me, "My whole way of life (off-grid, hand-built home, permaculture, etc) is only moving me towards the tail end of the train as it goes off the pali."
terracore - It's like we're all fish, swimming around in the same bowl.
Now you're getting it! Starting to sound like Naomi Klein - "In fact, climate change is, I would argue, the greatest single free-market failure. This is what happens when you don't regulate corporations and you allow them to treat the atmosphere as an open sewer."
And I'm the one with diarrhea.
You might want to have that looked at - which end is it coming out of? ;)
It was only like 150 years ago that scientists had to convince people of the value of investing in clean drinking water. You'd think after 75+ years of seeing the effects of leaded gas, LA smog, acid rain, greenhouse gases, COVID, vog, etc, we'd have come to appreciate the impacts from bad air miasmas and not want to perpetuate more.
Hey randomq - here's a task for your off-grid, powered by ka la AI assistant that would address a major Hawai'i need: please have it create an image with enough memetic strength to make people care. Thanks!

I think it was ‘73-‘74?
I don’t remember the nuclear student’s name, but I’ll see if I get around to contacting my old girlfriend, ask if she remembers. I wanted to check in with her anyway since I read it’s the 50th anniversary of the publication of “A River Run’s Through It.” Her mother handled the advertising for U of Chicago Press, and they printed 5000 copies when no one else wanted the book. It’s sold millions since that 1st edition, I was curious if her mom ever talked about her part in finding an audience for the book.
Movie recommendation: A River Runs Through It. Directed by Robert Redford, starring Brad Pitt, etc.

There is no requirement that the antecedent circumstances described in the mindset above must involve a specific monetary amount in order to apply. In reality, this seems beyond your clearly limited powers of comprehension. You weren't called a trust-fund kid, you simply exhibit the unfortunate mindset of one. When it comes to stepping away from reality, you're a master, and your clown-level, Jabberwocky-style deflections are, once again, no surprise. You're just another pretentious clown. Care to step in another heaping pile of your own making?
Duh... (insert your drool here).
you're probably won't be eaten, but used instead to feed the soybeans and kale?
I would hope that they would take into account that since I didn’t consume The Greatest Generation Protein Drinks, or use GreatGen Fertilizer on my gardens, that they would grant me a generational courtesy in return for my best wishes. Fingers crossed.

OMG, as far as I can tell Yak is a human being.. and all that other stuff, maybe you've had too much nuclear radiation in your diet.

So I don't get the trust fund but somehow still am part of the "trust-fund brigade"? Right... sounds like a bunch of slithy toves and borogoves to me. Any other insights to share dollar-store Freud? Maybe something about carbon footprints in Hawai'i or "mass-delsusion" vs "real resilience".
Edge - that they would grant me a generational courtesy in return for my best wishes.
Well let's hope there is time possible for such an assessment of personal virtues and mitigating factors. But as we've been told: "The world is full of bastards, the number increasing rapidly the further one gets from Missoula, Montana." ;)
Punatang - since Kirt has sent me into a guilt spiral over having Tang, Jr.
Not sure where the guilt comes in as both sources seem to just acknowledge and tally the reality of resource consumption and even provide some options to reduce it.
"Those are reducing flying, driving and meat consumption; that's where your personal emissions will have the biggest bang for the buck," Nicholas said.
Though adding kids to the planet does impact individual emissions, the good news is experts like Nicholas say individual choices can offset emissions, like choosing to have fewer kids. ...
Other lifestyle choices like raising your kids as vegetarians and teaching them about environmental conservation must be accounted for as well."
Maybe more people are now just listening to those 1970s hippy-dippy ideas, like 1972's The Limits to Growth:
“Sustainability is a new idea to many people, and many find it hard to understand. But all over the world there are people who have entered into the exercise of imagining and bringing into being a sustainable world. They see it as a world to move toward not reluctantly, but joyfully, not with a sense of sacrifice, but a sense of adventure. A sustainable world could be very much better than the one we live in today.”
@randomq - I once would have thought something similar, but as they don't know the kid, many people are unlikely to care (see COVID, Iranian school girls, etc). Also, that teddy-bear is probably indicative of a trust fund mindset, an unearned handout you'd expect from watchers of The View. Now if climate change were some sort of dark and nefarious looming threat to their truck back there - now that would be something to band together and oppose!
