Hurricane season 2026
"Chunkster, I meant to applaud your work . . . "

Tbank you, Mr. Tang. They just went up on all the picture windows that bowed during Iselle. Will do the smaller windows early in the morning.

Keep safe, everyone!

Our large windows are getting boarded up because Iselle shook them.  Justin Cruz just said Lala will pass us now at 75mph instead of 80.

That's a guess because no one really knows quite yet.  It definitely could and probably would cause some damage if this is true.

Probably of high winds keeps increasing with each update unfortunately. Lots of talk about the differing path predictions though and if the impacts will be mostly be northeast side of the island (Nanawale to Hamakua) or southeast (Nanawale to Ka'u). Those little jogs in the storm path might end up making a huge difference, but with a storm ~275 miles wide, we're all going to be impacted.

Is this "board up your windows" weather in Hawaiian Acres?  I have storm shutters where I need em, mostly deciding on if I want to board up my kitchen (half-wall screened lanai) or just mop up after.

Looks like the coast will get hammered a lot worse.

Each update is worse for Puna, we’re not in the center but as ironyak noted it’s a big wide storm.  I’m getting everything loose under cover.

Wired internet may go down.  Cell towers during Iselle lost their battery backup after the storm.  Best to check in with friends and family to let them know it’s possible you may be silent running, out of communication for a time.

In addition to the wind, looks like lots and lots of rain potential:

And the Weather Channel has Jim Cantore on the ground.

The Weather Channel’s Jim Cantore is in Hilo; a sure sign to take Tropical Storm Lala seriously : Big Island Now

Question:
I’ve been clicking between my go-to hurricane sites the last few days, but just now decided to check in with my Apple phone weather app.  For winds in HPP on Saturday at the height of the storm, it shows 20-25 mph winds with 40-45 mph gusts.  Roughly the same in Hilo and Volcano.  Anyone else show these low ballpark wind numbers?

Yes, HOTPE, seeing similar wind numbers between various sites.

Durgin posted this a about an hour ago and discusses unsure wind speeds at the moment:

Fox news brought its heavy hitter Kupuna (Bryan Norcross) into the studio to report on LaLa.

When the 3D map of Big Island is rotated to expose Hilo, it shows the one-two punch of purple haze heavy rain in the 18"+ bracket that is predicted to smack certain area of Hawaii. It could take months of emergency repairs to deal with the potential damage from this storm.

Shelters will open starting at 6 PM Friday evening.
