Hedges Versus Fences
#11
Rock wall costs will be quoted as per square foot - not per linear foot. Talking in linear feet does not recognize the height of the wall.

I recently had a wall quote at $15 per square foot. A large factor in pricing is the ability to get a truckload of stone and sand close to the site.
Assume the best and ask questions.

My guess is hat these walls are about one foot thick, so a four foot wall would cost $60 per linear foot. That's still expensive! However, since those chain link fences have to be replaced every few years, the long term cost may be reasonable.

There are a few lots in HPP that are more square-ish & even some that are over an acre (most of these are near the odd roads like Railroad....).
Most fencing is by linear foot, but it makes sense that rock is square ft.... but still is expensive! (and ~$100/ft for a 6' tall fence) so a front would be in the $10k range - ouch!

There are also many different types of rock install, with or without a footing, drystack or mortar, rock size & finish (some guys do more of a rough rock, others square off the face) even adding a cap or not... all of these can add or subtract price & durability....
you can also go with a low rock wall topped with chain link or even lattice or bamboo...
some do a rock front & some other fence along the other sides... really would keep costs down...

I have received an estimate for chain link fencing. That's not cheap, either (perhaps $12,000), especially given that the fence has to be replaced every few years. Even the posts have to be pulled and replaced eventually. A green, plant hedge sounds more reasonable, but I doubt if it can protect garden plants from wild pigs. Hopefully, they don't get down to the HPP lowlands often.

Thanks, everyone, for the great info.

well, we also received almost silly quotes for chain link so did it ourselves and have helped/taught friends to do it also. i did remove our chain link in front to do rock walls and i have to say, the fence had plenty of life left in it and it was about 20 years old at the time...(i used the posts/link for animal enclosures). the secret is to IMMEDIATELY put the caps on the posts so they dont fill up with water.... another trick is to get black spray paint and paint the posts and rails... you will be amazed that the fense disappears when you do this... it is suddenly not obnoxious chainlink...

We did a stone wall;
one standard 322'x135' HPP lot;
6' high;
two double gates at front, and two side gates, all with columns;
stones from the lot, and we used our equipment to move them to edges;
all costs -- labor, sand, cement -- $40,000.
we also provided the water, which is no small deal for that much mixing of cement.

My anecdotal research was that real estate with a stone wall had a premium price, other things more or less the same.

Expected life? More years than me, which cannot be said about any kind of metal wire/fence. Stones do not rust or rot.

Hello lquade -

I was wondering what it cost you roughly for the chain link and doing it yourself? 20 years of life just from adding caps immediately and painting it sounds like a good deal.

Mahalo in advance for your help.

I second the Stone Wall method.

But dang that's an expensive price tag!
