HB 444 Civil Unions

Far better minds than mine have weighed in on this issue. I know only one thing: I have been with the same person for over 13 years and regardless of the legal inplications, that man is my partner in life, love, business and all that the joining of two people (regardless of gender) can mean. We've been reciprocal beneficiaries since we moved here and that piece of paper, while small, means a lot to us.

I am proud to call David my partner, spouse, husband, whatever

Jon,
The same arguments about not using the military for social experimentation were used to argue against desegregating the military. It was argued that unit cohesion and readiness would suffer if you didn't keep the races separate. Sure seems like an absurd argument now.

Polling has been done of actual rank and file soldiers as well as top brass, and it showed that most soldiers under 30 had no problem with gays serving openly in the military, and most knew of one or more soldiers in their own unit who were gay and didn't have an issue with it. Older soldiers and commanding officers on the other hand had big issues with it, but claimed it was because the rank and file soldiers couldn't handle the presence of gay soldiers. There already are many gays serving honorably in the military, the question is just a matter of how closeted they have to be in order to continue their careers. Persecution of gays in the military has actually increased under DADT.

"hooser to force civil union vote":

"senate majority leader gary hooser says he will try to force a vote on same-sex civil unions if no other senators do so by the end of this year's legislative session in may.

the legislation has stalled since a tie vote in its senate committee wasn't enough to keep it advancing.

hooser needs only nine votes from the 25 member senate to pull the bill from the senate judiciary committee.

if he can get those votes, as many as 18 senators have indicated they would support the civil union legislation itself.

hooser, a democrat representing kauai, says he'll make the motion on his own even if he doesn't have a majority."

The motion to put the matter to a floor vote failed, 18-6.

Not a single member of the Big Island's Senate delegation voted in favor of the motion.

I am sure its getting better all the time...

So once we have open gays in the military, does that mean I can join up and be put in a womens barracks? [Wink]

The soldiers that I know tell me, once someone if found out to be gay, its becomes very bad for them, And its usually the young ones that have the issues with it.

Maybe we need to ask Faye to put together a bill that would remove marriage from the state purview altogether.... I don't see how anyone could be offended by that. Churches should feel good about it, then its all in theirs, gays should be happy because all they would need is a church (I know of at least one of hand).

I could say so much about this -- it pains me. To those that would oppose something like this, I say only one thing "how would you feel if the government that you support told you that you ..... YES, YOU ... deserve less rights and responsibilities than the person next to you?"

I don't want special rights, I just want the same rights as everyone else. And the responsibilities that go with that. I'll take the responsibility along with the rights. I just want to be treated like everyone else.
