First Annual Coconut Festival

(Hilo, Hawaii), August 11, 2012 --- Come one and all to 1st Annual Hilo Coconut Festival and enjoy family, food, and fun. The festival will take place Saturday, October 20th at Coconut Island (Moku Ola), next to Queen Liliuokalani Gardens on Banyon Drive from 10am –5pm. Kids, and families will enjoy Hawaiian Entertainment, drum making, rope making, basket weaving, workshops and cultural demonstrations, and more. There will be games and zany contests as well as visual arts, handicrafts by local artisans, and gift and clothing vendors.

The coconut is the tree of life in Hawaiian culture and tradition. Every part of the tree has purpose, from clothing, shelter, food and utensils as well as bowls and drums. The coconut is used for sugar, oils, medicines, vinegars, fermented drinks, and electrolytes for hydration. Many ceremonies and rituals include the coconut.

Also featured and celebrated are the plants Ko, Hala, La i, and Awa and their importance in Hawaii. There will be delicious coconut dishes as well as local foods to tease your taste buds.

A portion of the proceeds will go to support Kahu O Kahiko, promoting the culture and traditions of Hawaii.
