Oh man, this is why I love punaweb, it never ceases to surprise me. (And on the "finding controversy" front, I rest my case!)
awfjam, Thanks for pointing out how confused I am. (I really am confused.) But I chose my words carefully on this one: "I hope that the free market ALLOWS...the young kids to hone a skill, be productive, add value to the community, and make a buck in the process." Meaning: they are competing with for-profit enterprises for customers who are free to chose where they spend their money; so call me a "commie" if you will, but I hope they do well enough to survive and prosper.
You seem so cocksure that this won't add to the economy. How would you know that for sure? I think it COULD, likely more than Taco Bell in the long run. Someday a certain percentage of these kids, who could be doing unproductive things with their lives, will get decent paying jobs in our existing restaurants, open their own restaurants, create jobs, and invest in the community.
That said, I agree with you more than you realize, awfjam. But I'm much more concerned with what's good for my community than force-fitting the world into a pure Libertarian/unbridled-free-market ideology...but that's a conversation beyond the scope of punaweb. Maybe if we discussed it over a beer one day you might be able to sway me, especially if you were buying.
(Besides, I really want to meet your dog.) But we'll never reach consensus here.
You totally lost me with the "continuing to promote violence" remark.
"The most difficult subjects can be explained to the most slow-witted man if he has not formed any idea of them already; but the simplest thing cannot be made clear to the most intelligent man if he is firmly persuaded that he knows already, without a shadow of doubt, what is laid before him."--Leo Tolstoy, 1897
