This August, boats will be crossing the Garbage Patch from Hawaii to California, with up to 50 vessels in parallel tracks in what is the largest-ever scientific survey, the Mega Expedition. If you own or skipper a boat and wish to join them, they're willing to defray some of the costs.
The Ocean Cleanup has developed the world's first feasible method to clean up half of the so-called Great Pacific Garbage Patch in 10 years' time. But how many tons of garbage will be cleaned up? In order to determine the amount of plastic in the patch, The Ocean Cleanup is organizing the largest ocean plastic expedition in history.
So far, 16 Transpac entries have joined the Ocean Cleanup effort: Avanti, Varuna, Patches, Between the Sheets, OEX, Exit Strategy, Westward, Precepts II, Paranoia, Lucky Duck, Marjorie, Grand Illusion, Pipedream, Wizard, Phaedo, and Andiamo.
