Nadamucho,
"The summit of Mauna Kea does close, 30 minutes after sunset. [...]"
My apologies for using a colloquialism, but that's bollocks.
The summit does not close 30 minutes after sunset nor is there a mechanism to close the summit other than closing the summit access road near the VIS. That only happens when the weather is bad or will potentially be bad overnight.
Really can't believe the crap some people make up about visiting the top of Mauna Kea. Locals and tourists are up there nearly every night. We catch their headlights in our cameras all the time and I have been up there recently when someone knocked on the door asking for a tour of the telescope. Think it was around 11pm or so.
Visiting the summit region at night is discouraged for obvious reasons, but it is not closed unless the weather is bad or might become bad overnight. Will people please accept this or will you continue to spread misinformation?
