One thing that an architect in a full-service contract is hired to do is act as the owner's rep and make sure that work is done correctly before money is paid. Licensed contractors usually follow an ethical format for asking for no more than a set percentage of a job as a deposit, as protection against an owner's whim.

If you advanced payment and have trouble "visualizing" where the money went, you and the builder should sit down and go over his tabulation of labor and material costs, as well as future projections.
