I naively asked the postmaster why we couldn't get curbside delivery. The answer given was that "HPP decided a long time ago to have this delivery system"
The postmasters reply doesn't sound right. Who would "ask" for the most mediocre and inferior service possible? I could see the Post Office may have suggested banks of boxes and the HPP board accepted the proposal, but no one is going to ask to drive somewhere to get their mail when the alternative is to have it delivered to your door.
The population density of HPP is very different now. Houses are closer together than 30 years ago. Even the Hawaii Trib-Herald provides street side boxes and delivery.
I would love to have my Netflix DVDs delivered to my home, and picked up with same day return to Honolulu.* Or Amazon boxes, no matter how large could be left at our door, saving a trip to Keaau. Yesterday the line at the Keaau PO was out the door. It took 15 minutes to drive there, then 20 minutes in line.
* If our carrier returns to the Post Office after 2 PM, the mail he's picked up doesn't go out until the next day. I can't think of anywhere else in America where a Post Office would do that.
