Aloha Jim & Carol,
Yes, "Conan's" is a trucking service.
When you have the bulldozer guy clear your lot here are a few of my suggestions:
1. Save as many of the big ohia trees as you can. You can always take them down later and it is a LOT faster to save a tree than to plant one and wait for it to grow. During construction, put flagging tape around the root zone so the roots won't get smushed. No need to save a tree from the bulldozers to lose it later to construction trucks.
2. When the bulldozer is clearing the lot, have them dig the hole for the septic tank. That will save you a bundle when it comes time to get the septic installed since you won't have to pay for a different bulldozer to come in and dig the hole.
3. If you are having a house (or carport/garage) built on a concrete slab, don't have the cinders spread in that area, otherwise you will just have to remove them. Most folks have a layer of crushed cinder put over the cleared area so it will be able to be walked on after it is cleared. If your house will be on post and pier, it isn't as critical since you will be able to remove the cinders from under each cinder block. If you will be able to walk under your house, then it might be nice to have cinders there, if you won't be able to use the underneath of your house, then it doesn't matter if cinder is there or not.
I think there is something in Nanawale's covenants about storage containers. I think there is a time limit - a year? - that they can be kept on a lot. I'm not sure if I am remembering correctly or if they enforce it. You may want to have the container set down in an easy to remove spot. I don't know if the container will be a problem or not, but it might be something for you to look into. Maybe it could be disguised somehow? Well, anyway, I don't know that it would be a problem but maybe someone else does.
After Kwajalien, this should seem a much taller island, I would think! Not that I've been there, but I've heard stories. Is Kwajalien the one which runs out of fresh water in the afternoons? There was some atoll out that way that does. Something about water tables and seepage. It was interesting to hear about the ecology of an atoll.
A hui hou,
Cathy
