What if, upon completion of the TMT, a large asteroid is discovered hurtling toward earth.
Assume TMT is not built, and the asteroid is not diverted, so it causes a mass extinction event: this is what humanity deserves, for refusing to use its gifts, looking to the heavens in search of meaning.
