Kapoho Joe - So if Mac2017s crack opens up and spews forth lava, it will run to Pohoiki or Kapoho?
Once again, time to review Jim Kauahikaua's Lava Flow assessment paper from 2007:
https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2007/1264/of2007-1264.pdf
The predicted downhill path from Leilani actually runs North-East across Pohoiki Rd. PGV, & 132 skirting Nanawale and ending at the ocean just east of Hawaiian Beaches. However, there could be a variety of microterrain issues in that area that may lead toward the paths more towards the area between Opihakoa & Pohoiki or towards Kapoho.
Also, during the 1955 series of eruptions, over 24 vents opened across the entire ERZ over the course of almost 3 months. In short, be prepared as all of lower Puna is potentially impacted. Stay safe!
