It's not just $5 million or $10 million or $15 million or whatever the total number is that's now been spent on traffic control at the Mauna Kea Access Road. It's billions of dollars in research money that tax paying residents of Hawaii will lose:

The National Science Foundation is expected to decide its funding priorities for the next decade by the end of this year, and UH was expected to be positioned to receive billions for TMT-related astronomy research and instrumentation development, he said.
“If there’s no telescope, that funding goes somewhere else, ” Syrmos said.

It's an excellent article with a detailed breakdown of how and where funding for research projects is appropriated. Not the made up claims of "taking money from the keiki and the money could be better spent elsewhere."
Read the article. Blocking the TMT is what will take money from our keiki. And the money will be spent elsewhere. Like in Salt Lake City, Utah.
