I didn't bother contacting HD because it was past the 90 day return window and it was seemed a manufacturer warranty issue so I contacted Ryobi directly.
Just a suggestion, but if you have other issues with the mower document them all at the same time so they see that a full replacement is a better alternative than a warranty repair.
Their standard warranty is 5 years, and the handle issue is definitely a parts/workmanship problem covered by it, and the mowers haven't even been available for 5 years. My guess is that it's cheaper to replace the mowers than to repair them.
