Hawaii Radiologic Associates Hacked
#2
I thought the same thing when I heard it and it has since been confirmed. Well, I think they called it a "cyber attack", which to me means ransomware. Although I'm not sure how that affected the phone service though.

I read an interesting article about how "white hat" hackers are busting these guys. They hack the hackers and restore the system without having to pay the ransom. The whole thing is very low profile because no business wants to admit it, and the white hat guys don't want the bad guys to know that they are on to them.

It's also becoming more prevalent in small businesses, local government organizations and schools because they usually don't have an IT department and they don't keep their systems updated and/or secure. The bad guys can make a couple thousand or much more, depending on how much that organization doesn't want the public to find out about their lax security measures. They can hit thousands of targets with the click of a button, then just collect whatever they can and move on.
