We are definitely getting screwed, but being on an island we don't have as much competition. And somehow enough people can afford these ridiculous prices to perpetuate them.
Ahhh yes, it seems you may have swerved into the truth. It's about PRICE. For all of it's many faults, Capitalism uses price to get goods and services as close to to the right place and as close to the right time as our imperfect world with very imperfect humans and limited resources will allow. As you so brilliantly divined randomq, one human's "ridiculous prices" are another's "affordable".
As best I can tell, other systems, perhaps even the one that mymanao advocates, attempt to overcome their demonization of price in various ways. Mostly they seem to centralize things a great deal. At that point the imperfect humans have a tendancy to screw things up with a combination of greed and/or laziness which I'm sure we can all agree are two of our better known flaws.
Perhaps AI (or mymanao) + (insert your prefered non-capitalistic system) will finally = abundance for everyone. I look forward to having that free beer with terracore, Here-on-the primal-barstool, and all of you as soon as some non-capatalistic system gets The Punaweb Pub up and running. Should be any day now.
