Durian Fiend - The storm did maintain hurricane strength just beyond longitude 150, so it would have been bad news for us if not for the upper level trough steering it northward. Without that effect, Kiko could have hit us as a weak hurricane or strong tropical storm, despite the cooler water temperatures near the islands.
Yeah, reached a similar conclusion given the full storm path. Obviously, it did weaken over cooler waters and being hit by a tropical storm is preferable to any category hurricane, but as the oceans have been previously soaking up much of the excess heat from climate change, that barrier of cooler water just ain't what it used to be.
Leaves only one real explanation for Kiko's deviation - THEY have improved on the geo-engineering that Opihikaobob originally identified during Iselle. The state and county workers are probably in on it so they get to pocket that overtime from the impending storm, but then steer the storm away so they don't have to do any actual work. Crafty government employees - always one step ahead in their never-ending plot to fleece leilanidude! ;)
(No longer have access to the full ERSI toolset so forgive the map's simplicity, but thought this cat 3 to cat 4 back-and-forth around 25 deg C water was interesting, along with the several hundred miles it took for the cooler waters/drier air/wind sheer to fully weaken it from hurricane status)
