Alaska had previously announced back in August of 2025 that it would be taking over Hawaiian’s then fleet of four (4) 787-9's. (Tail Numbers: N781HA – 1st one delivered, N780HA – 2nd one, N782HA – 3rd one and N783HA the fourth one) These “transferred” 787-9's were immediately put into service by Alaska on its SEA to ICN (Seoul) and SEA to NRT (Narita) routes. Alaska still maintains one (1) 787-9 flight daily from HNL to SEA. Hawaiian had to immediately shift to its other fleet aircraft, namely the A330 and the A321neo for all mainland flights.
Alaska also assumed the balance of 8 more 787-9's originally ordered by Hawaiian.
On January 7th, 2026 Alaska took delivery of its now 5th 787-9, with tail number N784HA, but in the new Alaska 787 livery paint scheme. It then took N780HA out of service and sent it to the Fort Worth, Texas paint shop to be repainted in Alaska’s new 787 livery.
All interiors remain the same as ordered by Hawaiian at this point. Later in 2026, that will change. Hawaiian will be refurbishing its A330 wide body fleet as well.
Alaska also announced that it has ordered 5 more 787's but with those being the -10 variant, bringing the total 787's in service or on order to 17. Alaska also ordered 105 737-10's with an additional option to buy 35 more.
Still no word as to what the long-term outlook for Hawaiian will be with respect to its inter-island 717 fleet.
