Decaying whale parts at Honolulu Landing

The Whale of Honolulu Landing

Oh gather near, good people of this Puna shore so true,
Down by Honolulu Landing where the ancient waʻa once flew.
A mighty humpback whale has come to rest upon the stone,
Lying quiet on the black rocks, no longer swimming alone.
He traveled through the deep Pacific, guardian of the sea,
A living link to times long past, a spirit wild and free.
Now he rests among the lava, beneath the tropic sky,
A sacred visitor from ocean depths, where ancestors reply.

Oh the whale, the whale, the noble whale so grand,
Resting on the black rocks at Honolulu Landing land.
From the cold blue deep he journeyed, now he lies upon the stone,
Honored as a kūpuna spirit, never to walk alone.
Sing ho! Sing hey! With respect and gentle prayer,
For this child of the ocean who has found his resting there.

The people come in quiet wonder, speaking soft and low,
Remembering the old ways where the whales and kūpuna know.
Kāne and Wahine walk by, eating hot dogs on a bone,
While his body holds the mana, his spirit sings alone.
Uncle Tang whispers, "He is One with those before,
A guardian returned to us from the great ocean's shore."
Yak of Ironwood plays flute softly in the breeze.
The scientists may study, but the heart of Puna sees,
This whale as family sacred, treated with dignity.

Oh the whale, the whale, the noble whale so grand,
Resting on the black rocks at Honolulu Landing land.
From the cold blue deep he journeyed, now he lies upon the stone,
Honored kūpuna spirit, never to walk alone.
Sing ho! Sing hey! With respect and gentle prayer,
For this child of the ocean who has found his resting there.

Long ago the waʻa glided silent to this rugged shore,
Carrying the voyagers who knew the ocean's lore.
Now this whale has joined the stories written in the stone,
His bones shall carry kapu, sacred and his own.
If the county comes to move him we pray they please take care,
Let it be with reverence and aloha in the air.
For he is not mere flesh and bone that lies upon the beach
But a revered ancestor returned to us, oh Kane won't you preach.

Oh the whale, the whale, the noble whale so grand,
Resting on the black rocks at Honolulu Landing land.
He sang his ancient song in waters deep and blue,
Now he rests in Puna's embrace, forever part of you.
Sing ho... sing hey... with hearts both pure and true,
Kapu iwi kūpuna, aloha to the whale and you.
