In the early 1970’s I paid $125-$150 a semester for in-state tuition at a Big 10 university. My room in an apartment was $55 a month. An ice cream cone at the student union was 10 or 15 cents. Same for a beer. There was a view on the terrace overlooking a lake. Haunani Trask was a student at the same time I was there. But I don’t think I ever met her because I don’t remember anyone calling me haole while I attended.
Just for comparison, in 1986, the UK government paid for my tuition and gave me a grant for living expenses, including rent. Drinking age was 18, and the student union bar sold a pint of Tetley's for 59p. Things have changed since then, of course. Ever since then, the UK has changed its policies, and I don't know whether the US or Hawaii has changed theirs, but the idea was to get as many people into higher education as possible while charging them for it.
All I see from that is millions of people with useless degrees and serious debt. I don't know if Hawaii did things differently, but I don't think they did. All the observatories are looking for electronic technicians and engineers, and there are ridiculously few candidates in Hawaii, so the search continues.
