Far better minds than mine have weighed in on this issue. I know only one thing: I have been with the same person for over 13 years and regardless of the legal inplications, that man is my partner in life, love, business and all that the joining of two people (regardless of gender) can mean. We've been reciprocal beneficiaries since we moved here and that piece of paper, while small, means a lot to us.

Weird, but curious note: The first property we owned together was the first time one of the local escrow companies had ever encountered that situation. They actually had to call an attorney in Honolulu to confirm that we could actually hold title in that way. The law was that new. Since then, all the title/escrow companies are familiar with it. And if they are not, we have the documents to explain it to them.

I am proud to call David my partner, spouse, husband, whatever.

Now, end DADT --- "Don't Ask, Don't Tell". If someone is willing to be a patriot for our country (and all the risks therein), who they go home to at night means nothing. It hasn't affected Isael, England or any other of our European allies and I refuse to believe that our soldiers are so fragile that the mere presence of a gay or lesbian person in their ranks would cause a meltdown.

Side note: I did volunteer as has David -- we were both turned down. Me: formerly a civilian contractor to the Army for Strategic Defense, working on really-secret stuff. David -- trained and experienced nurse with a military background in Intelligence.
