Many of them already do charge for online access, including our very own local paper, which is a sad excuse for a local paper with so many stories coming from AP.
It seems like ads would make online access much more profitable, but then my favorite paper is still online for free. I would still pay to get access to the NY Times online if I had to. I already have to pay for premium access to the archives.
