I think that's ash on the protective cover of the camera. It has looked that way for a couple of days now.

I think the bunker fuel plants can make up the geothermal loss without any problem, it's the potential loss of transmission infrastructure that may be the issue.

As the earthquakes (magma) head east at some point it's going to encounter a lot of ground water from backpressure from the ocean. All that pressurized steam and gasses will look for a way to vent out, with lava following the same path.

Where will the magma and increased ground water intersect?

Increased Activity for Kilauea Volcano Message Wednesday May 3, 2018 at 8 AM


This is a Civil Defense update message for Thursday May 3, 2018 at 8 AM.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports the situation continues with a slight drop in intensity since yesterday. Low magnitude earthquake activity continues along the east rift zone in lower Puna which includes Leilani Estates, Nanawale Estates, to the coastal area of Kapoho.

Due to this activity, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory indicates an eruption is possible but not imminent. Because it is not possible to predict where an eruption could occur, the areas that could be affected are the regions surrounding Nanawale Estates, Leilani Estates or Kapoho.

The following impacts have occurred:


#9726;The Pohoiki Road is closed between Highway 132 and Leilani Avenue due to cracks on the road.
#9726;Cracks within Leilani Estates have been reported.



Due to the possibility of an eruption, the following are issued:
#9726;Area motorists are advised to be on the alert for roadway damage.
#9726;Prepare and review your emergency plans in case you need to evacuate.
#9726;While seismic activity has slightly lessened in intensity, stay alert and informed by listening to local radio stations for Civil Defense updates or call Civil Defense at 935-0031.

Hawaiian Volcano Observatory and your Hawaii County Civil Defense continues to monitor the situation. You will be informed of any conditions that affect your safety.

The Pohoiki crack was inches last night and is a foot and a half this morning.
Depth is at least 6 feet.
Crack is aiming almost directly at PGV.
Anyone from Leilani to Kapoho should be ready to move.

Looking like Pohoiki could be ground zero for the breakout. Any steam yet?

Prior to the 1960 Kapho eruption, there was a large crack that opened along the roadway in Pahoa town... the eruption took place in Kapoho.
Not a bad idea to be ready, but, we could see an eruption down slope of Leilani in the general region of the Malama-Ki forest reserve if the averaged seismic activity region has anything to do with pin pointing things.
At this point, it's anyone's guess.

True as to anyone's guess. My own guess is similar to yours. Either in that forest preserve or maybe even slightly offshore. Those quakes are sure shallow and following in lines down there.

Fair point, need to read my history better. I forgot about the crack in Pahoa before the eventual breakout in Kapoho.

An off shore event would be beneficial to all (except the fish), and probably make for an interesting show. Wasn't there a documented underwater eruption in Kealakekua bay in the 1700s?
