You may be right about the fate of those ohia along the highway, they have not said anything about it( as to the cause ). I do have another opinion about it though, Those trees did die from the (ROD,Wilt), it just happened a little quicker due to the areas work or disturbances. Just even a fresh pin or needle hole into a healthy Ohia can cause the tree to pick up the fungus from the boor beetle dust in the wind, or from other insects and frogs. Even the county bulldozers and heavy machine equipment could have spread the disease to that area, by previously working in an wilt infected area,jmo.
I watched the helco power line road from geothermal get a really good clearing as this fungus was being studied. I knew then the guy operating the machine was spreading the wilt by moving the trees and leaving them to rot into the soil or continue to send spores into the winds. When I asked him about all the dead ohia trees or possible fungus, he had no idea what was killing the thousands of trees he was now dozing around. Now if that same bulldozer then got hauled into hilo or volcano to work, it would have helped spread this wilt in that way too.

Puna's nurseries seems to be very unique as our nurseries unlike all others in the world have bought plants from places that have sent coqui frogs, fire ants, and this ohia wilt. I find it odd how puna is always ground zero for these invasions, like puna nurseries buy their plants from places no other nurseries do. Coincidence, bad protection management, condusive environment,or just very bad luck?
