The state rule is 70 miles. What it doesn't state, however, is if that's as the crow flies or actual driving distance. It's relevant because, for instance, Kailua-Kona is about 70 miles from HPP as the crow flies, but obviously a much farther driving distance. However, I do know one or two Hilo folk who have got out of serving in Kona due to the distance. Assuming Wao's summons is for state court, I think a simple letter stating the distance rule should get her exempt from attending.

The federal courts/United States District Court - ie... District of Hawaii Court in Honolulu rules are not the same as State of Hawaii Court rules with regard to Jury duty.

So is it a state or federal/grand jury summons? I find it hard to believe it's not clear in the letter.
