New Indian restaurant?
#31
"I would be thrilled with decent and I think they can do it. They seem to have the proper equipment but not the correct attitude. The food seems "lazy" if that makes sense.

fair enough, Jackson. i can see you are not senselessly bashing just for the sake of it. similar to a movie critique, best to give an honest and thoughtful opinion.

...which brings me to mention that every time i see this topic listed i keep thinking of that movie "The Hundred-Foot Journey", which i enjoyed recently.

I watched that movie just the other day. It was excellent, but so is anything with Helen Mirren in it!

If your ever on Oahu, try Cafe Maharani on south King st. On Oahu this weekend for the Elton John concert tonight. Had dinner there last night, food was excellent.

Not to hijack this thread (too late) but is there anyplace on the east side to get a good Gyro?

So, we had a bit of a tasting session this weekend. The conclusion is that a return visit is required to check on consistency, because it was a bit of a mixed bag.

Service: very friendly, no complaints.

Food

Meat samosa: too much meat! The meat was packed into the samosa and was under-seasoned, so not good. A little less meat and a few more spices and they would be OK.

Vegetable samosa: very nice!

Lamb tikka masala: really disappointing, far too much salt. This is one of my favourite Indian dishes in general but it was almost inedible. Will have to see if this was a one-off.

Chicken makhani: this was essentially butter chicken which is also a favourite of mine. This one hit the spot!

Basmati rice: no complaints, it was fine.

Peshwari naan: not the best I've had, but certainly not the worst either. Acceptable.

Aloo paratha: same as the naan, acceptable.

So, not great at all but still a hell of a lot better than anything else in Hilo. The tandoori food will be the next thing on the list I think but would also like to find out if the lamb tikka masala was a one-off.

No, I've been told such a thing exists on Oahu but have never found it there on multiple trips. Good g]Greek food does not seem to exist in Hawaii, even though all the ingredients are grown here and it is a relatively easy cuisine. Let us know if you find any.

We got good gyros at the Greek Corner near the Manaoa campus in Honolulu. There used to be a European Deli store in Kona that had them but I never tried because the store didn't really sell any Greek stuff, then they went out of business before I could change my mind.

Funny how this thread has developed. In the UK, Indian food and gyros (doner kebabs in the UK) are the food of choice after a few pints at the local pub!

that did it. even with the critique being a mixed bag, the menu list of Indian cuisine coupled with the mere mention of an appetizer consisting of a few pub-worthy pints instantly triggered a mercilessly savage Pavlovian reflex.

My apologies, PunaMauka2, but I hope there's some consolation in knowing you aren't alone!
