So, imagine, once ICE gets rid of the obvious, “illegals” they’re going to go after the Filipinos, the Portuguese, the Japanese, Chinese and of course the more obvious, the Mexicans. And, in doing so, start a land grab. Scare all the people of color out of here and buy up all their homes, their business holdings, their land.
I have a feeling that the impending "land grab" you speak of will look a lot like this scene from the movie "Revenge of the Nerds" when the Alpha-Betas take over the dorms and kick out the nerds:
If you watch closely, I think you will see a baby faced young Dude in this clip!
Of course the wealthy won't really care about high grocery or gas prices here. Probably all the better to price people out and get more people selling their land. But what is the theory? They'll eventually sneak in their own foreign laborers? Or AI androids will fulfill all their needs and they won't need us working slobs clogging up their beaches and roads anymore? Or they are just prepping and will use Hawaii to get through a few bad generations until the rest of the world is ripe for exploitation again? Or maybe they just like Hawaii and haven't thought through who will be left to clean their homes and make their food?
As things get more expensive, and land gets bought up, I think a big issue for us in Puna will be unpermitted homes. If the county council or state don't act, it will be a great way to force people off their land. The rich can make being poor illegal!

Appropriately, the image is by a Japanese artist.
Without his permission.
Without compensation.
When contacted, DHS spokesperson said they would keep using artists’ works without asking or paying them.
Aren’t law ENFORCEMENT agencies supposed to follow the law, not break the law? Like the two Hawaii County Police officers who were arrested last week for perjury, false swearing, and tampering? https://bigislandnow.com/2026/01/13/warr...tampering/
What happened to lead by example?
(Keeping the thread related to the cost of food, ICE officers were recently caught on video stealing the groceries of a man they detained, which seems to substantiate the general theme of this thread, food is simply unaffordable for some, even those receiving a $50,000 signing bonus. Do Puna SNAP recipients get $50,000 when they register for benefits? Would anyone here grumble if they did, but not complain if ICE grocery thieves did receive and keep a bonus?)

That is because of a little quirk in copyright law that allows DHS, or any other government agency that uses copyrighted material without permission to face few consequences because copyright holders can only sue the government for monetary compensation, not for an injunction to stop the use or force removal of the content as a copyright holder could use against a private person or entity.
And while federal agencies are expected to obtain permission or a license from the copyright owner, but due to the limited remedies afforded copyright holders as defined in the provisions of 28 U.S.C. § 1498(b) limits a copyright owner's recourse against the U.S. government to a lawsuit in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims for "reasonable and entire compensation" only.
Further, unlike private copyright infringement lawsuits, a copyright holder cannot obtain a court order to force the government to immediately cease the infringing activity or remove the content. This lack of an injunction provision in the law means the DHS et al, has less incentive to seek permission beforehand, as it can simply pay damages if a claim is successful.
Therefore, for many artists, especially those who suffer limited monetary losses, the time and expense of suing the government for a monetary award in a specialized court is never really worthwhile. This lack of practical recourse can allow the agency to more or less flout copyright law.
Copyright holders can use the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) to send takedown notices to various platforms hosting the infringing content, which does often result in the platform removing the material in some cases, not necessarily all.

I am sure a few would grumble about that SNAP recipient getting a 50k bonus under any circumstance but jump for joy at handing out 50k signing bonuses, along with a Glock, and a face mask, to unskilled, unqualified, non-vetted, drug test failing, and overweight individuals. Those few, who one could say are “dumber than a box of rocks” that is.
ICE officers were recently caught on video stealing the groceries of a man they detained, which seems to substantiate the general theme of this thread, food is simply unaffordable for some...
There are also dozens of reported incidents of ICE officers eating at various ethnic restaurants, mostly Mexican ones, only to come back hours later and arrest the owner(s) and employees.
As someone once said, “the paybacks have only begun.” Well, yes, they have, and here we are.
Takeout from Whole Foods can easily cost $450 for three people a week. Where is the biggest hit to the budget? Takeout and expensive beef.
I cannot see a family surviving on $200/wk unless they buy Costco roast chicken 4 times a week, and bulk vegetables and fruits.

Well now, after listening to our esteemed Agriculture Secretary, Brooke Rollins, explain it this way, I am convinced!!
As for the "one other thing," since this is Hawaii, it shall be poi. One (small) scoop poi. Made with taro YOU grew, cooked and mashed. No Foodland poi for you!

let’s grumble about our $100.00 of groceries at the checkout costing $100.08. Because of SNAP.
Is that intentional transmission of false information or is it just a case of Friday brain?
