I don't think a Ferris wheel could get permitted up there. Where on the wheel does the urinal go?

@MyManoa - this MAXAR image set from yesterday gives some good detail on that eastmost flow and it testing out those E to SE paths. Stray but a little...

Thanks for the reddit link ironyak. This photo from the Mauna Kea Visitors Center was spectacular:

Quote:The mayor just banned parking from mile markers 16-31, but said the park and bathrooms up there will be open 24/7 with night time security. So hey, we have a "viewing area" now. Better than 2018.
Source on this?
Roth said Gil Kahele state recreation area will be open 24 hours, providing parking there, and also there are parking spots along the highway at trailheads.
“What we’re trying to do is have people not park on the highway,” Roth said. “Its a highway. People drive 60 mph; it’s not a safe place to park.”

The thing about Kahele Rec Area open 24/7 was in a press release email, don't remember when or how I signed up for them...
This site has flow fronts and road closures mapped:

Hurray. Thanks USGS. So, how many days until the highway is at risk?
If you want to catch the show, don’t wait, would be my suggestion.

The County can't provide a viewing area because it is all State land.

Somewhat chunky interview Dane Dupont and Philip Ong (Hawaii Tracker) held today with Mayor Roth, Talmadge Magno (Civil Defense), and Ken Hon (HVO).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3foooZ43YQ
Ken fields most of the discussion (even about preparedness...) and discusses using "national security assets" to start the mapping process, tracking the flow front nearing the Hilo-Kona dirt road, the flow slowing on the flat area as it approaches near Saddle (no current time estimation), and some comparisons with the six-week-ish 1935-6 flow and nine-month-ish 1880-1 flow.

The thought of having to listen Magno stumble through his third grade book report again sends shivers up my spine.
I just came back from the flow. I would recommend going early. We wanted to watch the sunset and left Hilo about 4:30. nothing visible from there. Very little traffic going there. The no parking directive is a joke. Cars parked everywhere. A couple cops along the road but cops were outnumbered by cars by about 200 to 1. Plenty of room in the old protectors' parking area and along the Access Road. People still parked right on the highway though. Not sure why. Great view from junction of the access road and DKI. We drove up a couple miles to get away from the crowd but no better viewing. Came back down around 7PM and it was crazy with traffic going uphill to the flow. A beautiful sight to behold. Go early and watch it emerge.
If you look at Ironyak's map, there's a little finger on the right pointed more east than north and that seemed to be flowing the fastest while we were there. We talked to a wonderful old couple who had also seen the 1984 flow and they said there was no comparison. This one was small kine. Hilo is pretty safe for awhile.
Certainty will be the death of us.
