Ponds
#1
Thinking about having a pond put in. Anyone have any suggestions for a contractor that can do a concrete lined pond? Anyone built one, any problems, lessons learned you can pass along?

No matter how thin you slice it, its still balony.

Try Patrick at 345-0594. He built our pool and is vice-president of the pond society.

John, put a few fish in the pond and you have something that will eat into the mosquito population (literally.)

That probably wouldn't work Markie, I would eat the fish before they could eat the mosquitoes![Smile][Smile][Smile]

I would imagine Gambusia affinis or holbrooki (commonly called "mosquitofish") are in HI, they seem to have taken over the waterways worldwide and are introduced where they couldn't move to naturally. I keep them with my tilapia to keep down mosquitos population... They are extremely effective at eating eggs and larvae... Plus the slow ones help feed my tilapia! Smile

William, Just wondering ... Is there some formula for the amount of those mosquitofish per square yard of surface or by volume one would like to have ?

Thanks.

Pog,

from our experience, even if you start out with too few fish to begin with, you'll soon have more than enough...apparently the fish don't have many diversions in the pond, so they use their free time to procreate (except for the gay ones...oh wait, I'm in the wrong thread for that comment..my bad)

Ha Rich,

If you would not mind ... forgot to ask this one before ... So you have X average mosquitos about before the pond, you put the pond in ... I figure more mosquites are going to attracted to the pond but do you get a noticable increase in mosquitoes in the areas surrounding it ? "Surrounding it " might equal = say 20+' beyond the perimeter. Edit to add ...This would be with the horny fish in place already.

Thanks again.
