MEDIA RELEASE

HONOLULU – As island families and businesses continue to face high energy prices, Gov. Neil Abercrombie today announced a settlement between the State of Hawaii and the Hawaiian Electric Company, Inc. (HECO) that will result in the withdrawal of a rate increase request for Hawaii Island and a significant reduction in taxpayer dollars requested to cover project costs.

Subject to approval by the Public Utilities Commission (PUC), the formal settlement filed with the PUC on Jan. 28 outlines an agreement between the state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs’ Division of Consumer Advocacy (DCA) and HECO, including its subsidiaries, Maui Electric Co., Ltd. (MECO) and Hawaii Electric Light Company, Inc. (HELCO), which serve Maui County and Hawaii Island, respectively.

There was a lot of public participation to petition against it, particularly by BICC. In light of developing events, it may be mostly symbolic. Hawaiian Electric is just as much under the thumb of Big Oil as the rest of us, by historical circumstance, not some sinister, overarching plan. These islands are heading towards a peak oil scenario about 20 years before projections for the rest of the planet.

The Bakken formation in North Dakota is now visible from space. NASA was initially mystified where all the light flashes were coming from in an area that has no cities. It is coming from Big Oil burning off huge quantities of natural gas, and we taxpayers subsidize Big Oil to the tune of $10 billion per year, never raising a peep from the Teapublicans.
