Does any body know if there is a minimum distance required between the cesspool and the catchment tank?

5 ft but for more information check with the Dept of Health right near Ken's or your civil engineer.

I recently went to the Dept of Health to register my cesspool and they gave me the guidelines on wastewater system spacing requirements. A cesspool must be 1000' from a well, but it doesn't say how far it must be from a catchment tank.

Dinamight: One too many zeros? If I dug a well 1000' from my cesspool, it would be at least three lots away!

That makes sense, 1000 ft is a long way, but that's the number on their page of criteria. Must be a public well as you say, otherwise no one could have a well and cesspool on the same lot.

The 1000' rule was removed in the last water well standards update a few years ago. It now says something like "as far as possible" from a contamination source which is more than a cesspool. The DLNR (who controls the water and issues the well permits) doesn't have the 1000'rule. The DOH might still enforce something like that for Public water systems even though there is no good reason for that. Contamination usually comes from something going down the well from the surface. Thats why our wells are completely sealed.

Huh? When I was talking to the Building Department recently they said they are not approving new cesspools.
Composting toilets and properly designed greywater systems are ok as an alternative to full septic systems, but not cesspools, which are considered to be the main source of rising pollution to the groundwater. Who knows?
