We are getting things together so we can flee the comming winter weather here in Iowa. I am certain we will be fine in Hawaii, my wife on the other hand seems to think she has heard (read) of big problems with being the newbie's. (FNG's (F***ing New Guys) [  ]
I told her it is pretty much like anywhere else, it is what you make of it. I picked Puna, because IMHO there seems to be a lot more like minded folks in certain communities than other areas/islands, and the cost of paradise is less there. [:p]
Being a mixed couple will be less the issue there than here? Not that I have had much thought about that being a problem before thinking about moving to Hawaii, so probably won't be a big deal since I believe race is less and issue there?

Being a mid-40's white guy I've had no problem mixing with the people that live here. This goes for the retired japanese guy who was our neighbor when we live in Hilo to the young and same age as me "locals" who I worked with at Target when I took a second job on the overnight crew there. You might get the stink eye and some glares if you show up at a non-touristy location looking like a tourist but that is as violent as I've seen it. The biggest issues I've heard about recently where at a remote "party" location and a lot of alcohol and young testosterone was involved.
Matter of fact the only person on the island I've had a serious issue with was a middle aged relocated (from southern california) person doing studies at UHH that was a roommate in Hilo for a while. He was a pompous ass that no one in the house like though so I don't take it personal.

My wife and I retired and moved here just over a year ago. No problems. If you are a chess players let me know. We have a little chess club that now meets in Pahoa. If you are bringing firearms look into what is required of you. We have had no problems and have great neighbors and have met some new friends here. We are from Wa. State near Seattle/Tacoma area originally.

My wife does greeting card classes (Stampin Up) and scrapbook classes too.

Wuzzerdad, were you speaking about yourself? You mentioned "pretty much used up, cancer/cancer treatments have taken most of the fun out of the game for me..." First, I am sorry about the news of your cancer experience and I hope it is in remission or gone. Second, I hope you have researched available medical care here for specialized medicine. Thirdly, you aren't leaving your wife in a new land a long way from family and friends without making arrangements for her in case your cancer returns, correct?
You have impressed me with all your research for moving here. So I tend to presume you have prepared for the "worse-case scenario". Now with all my gloom and doom out of the way, hurry and get here before the snow hits!! I can assure you, I can promise you...your wife and you will not freeze to death here. And please get revitalized when you get here and get involved with things you and the wife love. Chess for you? Think of yourself as victorious over a nasty alien that attacked your body. Think of yourself as blessed to spend many more years with your wife in Hawaii. Start your new journey as winners. And meet your new group of friends.
Finally, on a very serious note: I can't find the emoticoms...the funny faces. I try and try and am getting very jealous over others discovering where they are and my failings. Help!

Wuzzerdad, I have been here a about a year and a half, and have had no bad experiences from locals. Being a Haole "Auntie" type, and always trying to say something nice to people I run across might help.

My wife will be fine if I should die, and actually I am ok with that eventually now. We have something a lot of people don't have and never find. I am one lucky guy. As far as it goes, she/we could travel every month back to the mainland as far as money goes, her well being financially will be enhanced further should I die.
Health care?? Yeah, I looked, it is Ok, with a trip to the big island for serious stuff, tell you the truth, I would just as soon pass on any heroic efforts. I have been in level 8-9-10 pain pretty much constantly for the last 3+ years, last time it was less than that I was in Hawaii.(last August/September)....
Was that because we were on Vacation, and depression lifted? Partly that for sure, but we were there way longer than a vacation, even though that is what it was. I was amazed[:p]
I skip around a lot, my health care can come from the VA, and there are a couple of good hospitals on the Big Island. I assume cremation is available?
