Hawaiian Acres Problems
#1
While driving out of the acres this AM i noticed a boarder collie mix dog laying on the side of the road in the bushes . the poor animal was alive and breathing , but could not raise her head . called the Humane society they sent a vehicle to pick her up , but she eventually died. they thought it could have been poisoned . what is wrong with the community in the acres. I'm disgusted .

Well let's reserve judgement before we start indicting the entire subdivision okee dokee? Perhaps there was something environmental that would cause such an outcome? I guess we know it wasn't rabies, but geez louise JTF, lay off the broad brush strokes please.

Could have been a cane toad

she might have been hit by a car, in which case her owner is to blame for her being loose

i agree the owner should have kept the dog on the property, that is a huge problem in many areas . the roads are so bad you simply cant speed or drive fast , and i'm just going by what the Humane society worker observed and said.

Dogs can end up poisoned without it being a deliberate act. Anti freeze, certain perfumed soaps, dark chocolate (in high enough quantity) and slug bait are just a few examples of common household items that can kill a dog.

Having worked for a humane society for many years, I've seen dozens of dogs found in this manner and many of them died. It is almost never anything nefarious like an intentional poisoning. Sometimes they were natural causes like seizures (dogs are more prone to this than humans) and many dogs can get a condition where runaway seizures cause them to die from heat exhaustion. Being hit by a car is another likely cause. If the dog doesn't die immediately from injuries it can die within 40 minutes or so from shock. I saw a dog that (by multiple witness reports) was hit by a car going 35-45 miles an hour and the dog flew 30 feet from the impact. When I got there the dog was standing there staring into space. It started having respiratory distress caused by shock and by the time I got it to the vet was on death's door. A quick injection and 5 minutes later the dog was fine. None of it's injuries were life-threatening on their own, though it did need some treatment. The same injection also stops seizures and the associated heat stroke/exhaustion. I already mentioned cane/buffo toads. I brought up the seizure thing because after a seizure many dogs get up and run around but often they can neither see nor hear for about 30 minutes and they sometimes wind up running into traffic. I think it was irresponsible for the shelter worker to say they "thought it could have been poisoned". Nothing against the shelter workers if they said that... that is a tough job and we have volunteered at the Keaau shelter. They have a LOT of turnover. But that is not a responsible comment, nor an accurate one without an investigation to base it on.

i know that a lot of dogs went missing on the upper side of the acres a couple months ago . not sure what happened i think one was found shot. i always feel sad for the dogs , if only they were in a fenced yard . and while waiting for the humane society one neighbor passed and said her nursery was robbed over $2000.00 worth of rare palms . trouble brewing in paradise.
