New Neighbors & Violations
#11
we had similar situation, but several lots away. but their generator started running 24/7. tried the "friendly" approach then figured out it had to be dope and growlights. soon as i mentioned dope the county was interested.. they didn't give a **** (pun intended) about the open sewer or tents. i don't know who took care of the problem, if police or other neighbors. it went on for 3 weeks only one time generator sputtered to an out of gas stop, can't imagine the gasoline bill for non-stop generator. just when we were ready to take care of it, someone else did thankfully...

yup, Lots and Lot's of patience... Do What you can to be a good neighbor, hopefully in 2-4 weeks they will settle down. Invite them over for a BBQ.

Seriously, having a good relationships even if they are a bunch of A-holes, don't sour that... last thing you want is them knowing what your hot buttons are and just pushing them and you to limit of listing your house on Craigslist. Best, to ignore everything if you can't work it out. Chances are, they are "DREAMERS"...

Dunno where you live, but most people can't handle living in a tent for long, or running off a generator. It gets old real fast and after about a few months you may find that they give up on the Hawaiian "DREAM" really quickly. So, yeah, you may have to put up with it for a short time, but it's better than being nasty relationship to where they do stupid crap before they leave.

Yeah, I'd rather give them a extension cord than listen to a cheap 300 dollar gen set that sounded like a lawnmower 24/7. Don't let them take advantage but definitely you want to be on right side of a neighborly friendship (if can).

It's why I bought a 3 acre square lot. Those .3 acre lots seem pretty big till someone moves in with a few hunting dogs that bark 24/7. I think, if you wanted complete privacy, one would have to buy six 3 acre spaghetti lots or more. 750 X 1200 ought to do it, even tho, taxes will be harsh, you'll appreciate it later.

Is any of this legal? Will building dept or dept of health do anything if reported?

FWIW this pretty much describes me although I compost and use solar panels plus what is essentially a Honda eu3000i generator (AlphaGen 3000 that puts out 48 volts DC). I consider myself an OK neighbor.

Hopefully you won't hear the generator after a while, just like the coquis. As far as the outhouse, you could go over there and say, "Uh, not sure if you know it, but the county is cracking down on outhouses" (or something similar, whatever the truth is) and maybe warn them that even unpermitted structures are taxed. I guess you could also ask them if there's any way to cut down on the generator noise - maybe they can build a rock wall around it or something (altho that might just make it louder!). They might merely be ignorant of what's acceptable and what isn't. When I think of all the things we didn't know about when we got here...!

At one time in the past, HPP actually pressured the health department until they acted against two lots which had unsanitary toilet arrangements. There were about a couple of dozen people at each location without so much as a chemical can port-a-potty, so it was really bad. I don't know if the current HPP management would help you or not, but it might be worth asking. Call 966-4500 or visit the office on Makuu between 16th and 17th.

Isn't there some sort of noise ordinance?
As an aside, when you sell your house you have to disclose about "excessive" noise. Examples on the form are coquis and even barking dogs. You may not want to sell your house while the situation is going on.

I don't think so, those disclosures are blanket ones. Fire ants should be on the list as well and probably will be one day.

The rest is due diligence. As if these people change or move out than the problem would not be there... This crap could happen to anyone. Tho waiting it out could be forever. Next step is try feng shui. Reflect all that negative energy back at them. Smile Buy some used mirrors.

I Would let them use your power so you don't have to listen to the noise. Then after about a week, send them 240 volts instead of 120 volts n smoke all their stuff. Smile
