Devil's advocate. I had an acquaintance who was chronically one. He was vociferous in debating. The back and forth would go on and on, and then he'd suddenly say: I've agreed with all you said from the start.
IMO it's best for people to hold the views they espouse. Unless you're just going to throw out a few comments for consideration. JMO

I pretty much agree with Kalakoa, however the following quote raised my hackles: "elder resident homeowners -- their retirement benefits aren't taxed, and their property taxes aren't going up, so failure to expand the tax base doesn't really cost them anything extra."
Every time I get a tax bill, the taxable value has increased. Therefore my taxes DO GO UP. Pity to spoil a good argument for a lack of simple research. (And don't get me started on the "road repair/maintenance" extortion in HPP).

I figured that was was the scene you you chose, but the farting around the campfire scene kinda works as well.

As you get older, the exemptions go up too.

The retiree towards the end summed it all up:

I had a friend who attempted treatment at the extremely limited medical hospital in Pahala over the weekend. They could barely remove an impaled guava branch, and it took 3 hours before anyone would even look at it.
Since their medical facilities lacks staffing and equipment, Spin Launch might calculate what an onsite helicopter would cost them, for their own use and for extreme medical emergencies encountered by elderly retired Ka'u residents who may require advanced treatment in Hilo or Honolulu. Perhaps some current opponents of Spin Launch may then discover a newfound appreciation for brains & innovation.
It could make the project unaffordable, but since satellite launching is a capital intensive enterprise from the get go, maybe there's room for a (sorry Punawebbers) helipad and helicopter in their operating budget.

Sorry, Kalakoa, already maxed out on exemptions - but the County hasn't see fit to max out my property taxes.

I think his point was if there was more revenue and a diverse economy then property taxes wouldn't have to be the primary source for the county's revenue.
You can see that a large portion of the people in that room came for a fight. They were making up emotional arguments on the spot one after another. No one was even able to hear anything about their plan, their technology or what they would do for the community.

The comments on the bigislandvideonews thread are hilarious...
I can't decide what this indicates:
(1) ignore public input
(2) move business to another geographic location
Either way for the Big Island its a loss
