Well, Billy managed to sign martial law in order... Tho, with Kim having heart attacks and probably still loopy just from getting back out of the hospital and old age. I haven't heard much from him, other than, puna is his home and how much he loves it... If he is so in love with Puna why not follow suit? I think he should step down before he dies on the job. I agree with all of you, since, it's bad enough to be displaced living with friends or worse a shelter and having to worry about possibly having your home/property destroyed by lava. Now they gotta wonder if anything will be left if they ever get to return to "home". The national guard should be flying drones at night around the perimeter of the subdivision looking for people making trails.

Rebecca Solnit wrote a book about the fallacy of looting during disasters, "A Paradise Built in Hell: The Extraordinary Communities That Arise in Disaster."
Yes, it does happen, but nowhere near the extent people presume it occurs. There is far more misinformation about looting, and rumors about thieving, than actual robberies during a natural disaster.

I remember watching live TV of looting during the RK riots and what surprised me the most was somebody had put their vehicle into a tire outlet and was mounting tires and installing them on their car like they owned the place. That was more than a "smash and grab" crime, it was somebody who was willing and able to spend a good amount of time to commit their crime to score what, a few hundred dollars worth of "free" tires? Please excuse me if I call BS on some LA liberal's "opinion".

Hawaii County Police Chief Paul Ferreira flatly debunked internet rumors that looters are gaining access to abandoned homes by dressing in police uniforms. “Facebook, Instagram … all that social media has created a disaster for law enforcement,” Ferreira told the crowd.
“Don’t believe it,” he said. “They’re putting out false information.”
Instead, Ferreira said, residents should pay attention to Hawaii County Civil Defense alerts and updates. “That is where the truth is,” Ferreira said.
He told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser afterward that there was no evidence of looting — “not at all that I know of,” Ferreira said.

I also see that rumors are being spread about a big earthquake coming (nobody can predict earthquakes) and even lava in HPP!
What sort of people do this.

The misinformation is nearly as stressful and the real stuff happening. Last night, some idiot on Facebook claimed a crack had formed in Nanawale and put up a fuzzy pic. People were freaking out. Turns out it was an old crack and even had grass growing in it. It's like yelling fire in a movie theatre.

Would police even respond in Leilani if someone called to report a crime taking place?
If they don't respond, does that mean no crime has happened since they didn't witness it?
Of all of the social media videos and photos, none seem to have any evidence or mention of National Guard or police.

Since there's a mandatory evacuation order, I assume those doing the filming won't be doing it in places where the police or national guard are.
Doesn't mean they're not there.

You mean the people right out in the open, directly in front of every one of these fissures?

Well, you know what they say about assuming... Police and National Guard do not care about filming and nobody is being dragged away from their homes.

Even a mandatory evacuation order doesn't mean you have to evacuate. Whether it's sensible to stay or not is another argument, but I think what's clear, especially from the various threads in the lava flow emergency forum, is that we're learning a lot more and more quickly about the fissures and lava flows from local social media than we are from the authorities.
