Kim, 78, was slammed by two Honolulu columnists this week for introducing Willie Nunn, the Hawaii point man for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, as "that colored guy in back there."
...
If he had a do-over, would he have said it differently?
"I would have done nothing different," Kim said.

Hey, whatever you gotta say to get Federal emergency funds these days.

I haven't heard that term used by a public official since about 1970, and it was in Alabama. Is Kim working for the Trump administration these days? Sounds like it.

Old people use old terms sometimes. I'm not convinced there was malice involved, maybe early onset?

BS, he is not a racist, he is a very kind, humble man. Give the guy a break, he just suffered a heart attack and came home from the hospital to his hometown being inundated with lava.

And the defining time frame is always one day less than I or my family have been here.

If he really didn't mean anything racist by it, then everybody who was offended for him needs to get their own problems in check. The fact that he rejected the opportunity for a public apology means that he was probably just using the nomenclature he grew up with. "Politically Correct" wasn't even a phrase that had been invented.
Stop voting for these "old school" boys and you won't have to hear from them.

There is a couple threads on this on Facebook too. My take is , and I wrote it on FB too, is that I give him a pass on this. He should not have said it, but he did not do with malice. My parents may have used that terminology, and they were born around 1917. Different time, different words. As I said on FB,, the NAACP hasn't changed their name to NAABP, the National Organization for the Advancement of Black People. So, knowing that, the term "colored" must not be a derogatory remark. I have never used the term "colored" myself.
Now, if he had used the "n" word, then by all means, let's all be offended. IN this case, I say let it go. Oh, guess I should state that I am 64, born in 1953.

Exactly.
Watch any movie from the 1930's - 1950's with black people in it, and you can really get offended. Or with Asians or Native Americans. Better yet, read some history about black Americans and really prepare to be outraged.
Harry would never say anything as offensive as what you'll see in an old movie or read in a history book about slavery. He himself may have been called far worse than "that Asian / Oriental guy" when he was growing up, so I'd guess he's fully aware of, and understands prejudice and racism.
